You’ll hear the phrase, “prevention is the best cure,” many times in your life. Because it’s true in so many instances. Especially when it comes to conditions, like type 2 diabetes that are, to some degree, preventable. Even if type 2 diabetes runs in your family, there are things you can do to stop the cycle and take control of your health and destiny when it comes to diabetes, by reducing your risk of developing the disease.
Aside from genetics, there are three factors that play a substantial role in risk management for diabetes/
- Diet.
- Weight.
- Exercise.
Getting these three things under control can significantly reduce your risk of developing diabetes, even if you have a close relative who has the disease.
- Diet. Eating a diet that is rich in nutrients and that limits refined carbohydrates and sugar offers many benefits for your health when it comes to reducing your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
- Weight. Maintaining an ideal BMI is best for risk management and avoiding diabetes. However, losing some weight can generate significant health improvements in addition to reducing your risk of developing diabetes. Reducing your current weight by seven to 10 percent can reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 50 percent.
- Exercise. Aerobic exercise causes your body to utilize glucose in your blood, lowering blood glucose levels and allowing your body’s natural insulin to work more effectively, creating greater insulin sensitivity overall.
Managing these three things can help you reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes even if you have a family history.
