Have you just been diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes? Here are five essential things to know:
- You’re Not Alone
There’s a worldwide community of people who’ve been where you are now and can provide support and information. Reach out to health professionals, local support groups, and organizations, such as the American Diabetes Association.
- You Can Do This
Diabetes can’t be cured, but it can be managed. You can enjoy a healthy life and avoid serious complications. Your choices matter!
- Knowledge Is Power
Make a list of questions to ask your doctor:
- What should I be eating?
- Will I need insulin?
- What else can I do to keep myself healthy?
- Do I need help from Certified Diabetes Educators? CDEs are health professionals with specialized, up-to-date expertise in diabetes who can coach you on diet, exercise, medication, coping with anxiety, and more.
- Get Moving
A solid exercise routine is a power-move against diabetes. Physical activity lowers your blood glucose levels while boosting your body’s sensitivity to insulin.
- Find Emotional Support
In addition to joining a support group to find others who will encourage you and help you deal with your emotions, talk with your physician if you have anxiety, depression and other emotional challenges. A certified diabetes educator or therapist may be able to help.
