Many medications have some common side effects, including diabetes meds. Discuss these or other side effects with your doctor if you experience them after taking your diabetes medication.
Hypoglycemia / Low blood sugar
You take diabetes meds to lower your blood sugar. There are times when you may experience blood sugar that is too low, resulting in hypoglycemia.
Taking diabetes medication is a bit of a balancing act that requires constant monitoring and adjustment to reduce the risk of your glucose going too low.
Kidney complications
Commonly associated with biguanides like Metformin, kidney complications are somewhat common among diabetic patients taking this medication. Discuss the risks of kidney complications with your endocrinologist.
Upset stomach
Experiencing an upset stomach is a common side effect among those who take Metformin, sulfonylureas, and alpha-glucosidase inhibitors. You may experience an upset stomach with other diabetes meds, so make sure that you let your doctor know about this side effect.
Weight gain
Some diabetes medications cause weight gain. The weight gain is often temporary while your body adjusts to the medication. Let your endocrinologist know if you experience an increase in hunger after starting new medication.
Injection site swelling
There is a risk of developing swelling at an injection site. Swelling may occur based on the location of the injections. Choose fatty tissue for your injections rather than muscle.
