Juggling diabetes and work may seem like an impossible task. Consider these five tips to juggle diabetes and your job, and join the many people that still lead a productive lifestyle.
Plan Ahead
Make sure that you have time to eat breakfast before you leave home. Avoid that fast-food sausage muffin, the bakery donut, or the vending machine snacks.
Snack Healthy
People that have diabetes have to learn how to snack in a smart way for that afternoon slump to avoid a blood sugar spike. Keep veggies with a healthy dip or snacks with healthy fats at your desk or workstation.
If You Do Indulge
Workplaces may sometimes seem like an open bakery or late-night food station. Somebody brings donuts. The boss throws a pizza party to celebrate profits. There is cake and ice cream every time that someone has a birthday.
It is understandable that you do not want co-workers to feel like you are not part of the team. Indulging once in a while is not the end of the world. Eat small portions, and keep a close watch on your blood sugar.
Pick a Team Member
Pick a partner at work that knows where your supplies are and that has access to them. Let that person know the signs of a diabetes-related emergency.
Know Your Rights
The Americans with Disabilities Act protects workers with diabetes. An employer cannot fire you because you have diabetes. You are still considered to have a disability even if your medications keep your diabetes under control. Learn your rights to help protect yourself in the workplace.
