Your endocrinologist is your partner to help you become motivated to control your diabetes. The specialist helps you work to keep your blood sugar levels under control. There are seven questions that you may have for your endocrinologist.
Is there new medication or technology on the horizon that can help me accomplish my goals?
The technology to treat and manage diabetes constantly evolves, with new hope for people who have type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes. New insulin products, glucose monitoring tools, and oral medications can possibly help people that struggle to control their diabetes.
How often should I check my glucose levels?
There is no one-size-fits-all approach for individuals who have diabetes to check their blood glucose levels. Work with your endocrinologist to determine your best approach to check your blood glucose levels. Do not hesitate to ask if a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) might be the right choice for you.
What are my A1C and blood glucose goals?
Your goals may change each time that you visit your endocrinologist. Ask what your adjusted goals should be until your next visit.
Do not feel discouraged if you do not achieve your goals at each visit. Working with your endocrinologist and other members of your diabetes management team can help you achieve your goals.
Should I adjust or change my medication?
The treatment for diabetes sometimes requires adjusting the amount of insulin that a person takes, or requires a change in the type of insulin for a person to better control their diabetes.
One example of an adjustment is that the endocrinologist may decide that you need one type of insulin during the day and another insulin at bedtime.
How often do I need to see you?
It is important to know how often you need to see your endocrinologist. Make sure that you plan for each appointment in advance so that you do not miss an important visit to your endocrinologist.
How often should I check my feet?
Checking your feet on a regular basis is important when you have diabetes. Ask the endocrinologist how to properly check your feet, what changes to look for, and when to call the endocrinologist about any changes.
